I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’m a little over design shows. None of them really match my style, and, for me, they start to seem monotonous after awhile. (Sidenote: if you’re an HGTV fan, we can still get along! You do you). However, I recently stumbled across one show I can not get enough of. It’s called The Established Home and it stars none other than Jean Stoffer, the renowned kitchen designer. I’ve been watching on HBO Max, but I believe it also airs on Magnolia Network and is one of their original shows.
There are a few reasons I just love this show. For starters, the main designer, Stoffer, isn’t just a “design show star.” Oh no, she’s a bona fide designer with years of experience. The show also follows her daughter, Grace, as she learns the business. The multi-generational aspect of the show is kind of neat. It’s fun to see how their styles and perspectives on design mesh.
Another reason I can’t get enough? They don’t really talk about choosing throw pillows or get into the nitty gritty, seemingly exaggerated construction details. They talk mostly about choosing finishes, tile patterns, color, and use of space. If you’re planning a reno, I 100% recommend watching a few episodes. They’re practically master classes on choosing tile patterns.
The last major reason I love this show? I just like the Stoffer Home style. It’s as simple as that. Their designs feature lot of blues, greens, and neutrals. They’re big on natural materials and “living finishes”—items that age well with time. Also, none of their rooms really feel OVER designed, if you know what I mean. The Stoffer aesthetic very much leans toward casually elegant.
New episodes air on HBO Max on Fridays. In the meantime, check out a few rooms from Jean Stoffer below, and shop some of my picks from Stoffer Home.
